With all of the certainty of the Democratic Presidential candidate contest . The NBA’s MVP contest is liable to be just as cantankerous, contentious and have the about the same amount of tension and perhaps terseness. The poltical infighting within the party can only lead me for one to believe that the Presidential campaign’ll be McCain’s to lose, if the Democrats don’t get their house in order and stop making complete assholes of themselves. As to the NBA’s own list of candidates there’s a slew of candidates that are equally appealing in so many different ways.
Sen Hillary Rodham-Clinton (D. Ny) One of two Democratic Party candidates seeking their party’s nomination. The other being Sen. Barack Obama (D. Ill)
The other candidate and contender for the party’ s leadership position and that for the Presidency is Barack Obama.
And whilst Hillary Rodham-Clinton and Barack Obama wage their war of words as to who best fits the ideals and makes for the best candidate for the party. The majority of NBA fans are more concerned as to who’s more deserving of the accolade of being the league’s MVP.
Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics. Whose play this season might just be the sole reason that they make it to the playoffs. He’s provided leadership and heart to a team that in reality didn’t possess any until his arrival. picture courtesy of ap/photos/….
The ravenous NBA fans can be thankful that there’s a plethora of candidates to choose from in either conference. Though it can be maintained the quality of basketball being played in the Western Conference is of a much higher quality altogether than what is being played in the East. Though not all of us’ll agree as to who those stars are in a great many respects.
The Boston Celtics have set the league alight this season and that has been primarily down to the presence of Kevin Garnett. Who it can be said is having a phenomenal season. His productivity and leadership is apparent in the turnaround of a Celtics’ team that seemingly might’ve been going nowhere this season until Garnett’s arrival. And with the addition of another All Star in the guise of Ray Allen this team has now become a formidable one.
They’re now seen as the presumptive favorites to win it all at the culmination of the NBA season. Ther Celtics with their win last night over the Houston Rockets cemented their position as the elite team in the Eastern Conference. The fans in Detroit however might think otherwise. As their quintet of starting players can arguably say that they might be the equal of the Celtics. Both are certainly capable of putting on a show of quality basketball .
Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic shows his intensity driving the lane. picture courtesy of ap/photos/…….
Overall the candidacy in the East isn’t that great but what there is , it can be said is of sound quality and of the best that the conference does have to offer. There are no real surprises there however perhaps than possibly the growth and maturity being shown by the Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard. He might just be the best center in the Eastern Conference at this juncture. Though his game hasn’t yet reached its full potential. There are ominous signs that once he’s rached his peak he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
The Orlando Magic have made it to the postseason by process of elimination as no one within their division is within a hair’s breath of catching them. Dwight Howard and his game overall has matured though there are times where the player himself lapses and shows signs of fatigue and desperation. But in time I believe that he’ll overcome those frailties and be the player that many believe that he can be. Howard’s presence and the tandem that has been created with the arrival of Rashard Lewis in Orlando has provided the step up for the franchise to be considered contenders but favorites.
But if Howard is seen as the leader of the team it can be said that the catalyst for much of their play has been provided by swingman Hedo Turkoglu. His play has been inspirational for the team this season.
LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers . picture courtesy of ap/photos/…….
Last year’s losing team the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to prove that last year’s arrival in the Finals was no fluke and that lightning can strike twice in the same place. LeBron James leads the team with authority and intensity but it can be said that it’s not matched by his teammates. And even though there’s been additions and subtractions to the team, it can be said that the Cavaliers’ success will be determined by not James’ presence of mind in leading the team when they’re enjoying success but also when they face real adversity as well. And based on what we’ve seen from the team so far this season things don’t seem to bode well for them should they make the postseason.
As much as his stats stand out on the box score one can see that he can’t continue to do it all on his own. And even with the presence of Zydrunas Ilgauskas as the other scoring option. The team’s limitations can be measured by the fact that other than James and Ilgauskas there’s not really much else there that’d make you think that they really do have a chance to win it all.
Chauncey Billups of the Detroit Pistons shows his grit and determination. picture courtesy of ap/photos…..
The ever present Detroit Pistons though so disappointing last year in the playoffs with their heart rendering loss to the Cavaliers in the conference finals. They’ve remained under the radar and have played the usual solid brand of basketball expected of them. Under Flip Saunders’ coaching they’ve shown the same resolute staunch defensive capabilities that we’ve known them to possess. But on the other hand they’ve also shown that they can play and score with the most explosive of teams in the NBA.
And that’s why they cannot be counted out as a threat in the Eastern Conference or as a contender overall for the NBA title. And in point guard Chauncey Billups they may well possess one of the more understated stars within the league. The man just lets his play on the court do all of the talking for him. And who are we to judge him otherwise ? He just brings his game to the house each night and we as fans of the game are the better for it. In this day inflated ego’s and a star power driven league it is good to see a player that still possesses a normalcy about himself and game a that only gets better with age .
In watching the Western Conference unfold at present is akin to watching a National Geographic nature piece where we’ll see an onslaught of carnage take place as predators devour the weak amongst their lot. It’s indeed scary to this carnage and not wonder how the survivors’ll ever make it beyond the point they’ve now reached. It may well add to the excitement of the season for the fans. But if you’re team isn’t winning at this point and a contender then you ought to hop unto another bandwagon. The teams sitting atop of their divisions have had a successful season so far. And one might some are having memorable and often spectacular seasons. The Houston Rockets of late have been on a tear. Though last night they were brought firmly back to earth with a 94-74 loss to the Boston Celtics.
The Portland Trailblazers and New Orleans Hornets have been the surprising teams in the west with their strong play. Though the Blazers have cooled off as of late. What once looked like a promising season has now turned out to be much less. But it provides them with hope for the future.
Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers seen here against the Houston Rockets. picture courtesy of ap/photos/…..
The Los Angeles Lakers’ the NBA’s most famed franchise in terms of its star power is seen as a force to be reckoned with this season. And now that Kobe Bryant has a team of substance around him . It appears that he’s now content and his striving for a fourth NBA ring seems to be his lone goal this season. But I for one feel that the lack of recognition shown in him not having won a league MVP award may drive him further to prove what the majority of us seemingly recognize that he’s by far the best player in the league. We may well think of Byant as merely nothing more than a human highlight reel and his stats just seem to leap of the page at you each time you’d care to take a look at them. But it seems that he’s now bring a new fledged side to his persona and play.
Having him surrounded with a great complement of players has obviously done something not only for Bryant but for the franchise and its fans in general. Say nothing of which the owner Dr Jerry Buss and coach Phil Jackson have to be supremely happy at this juncture.
Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets makes the jump shot over the advancing Drew Gooden of the Chicago Bulls. picture courtesy of ap/photos/…….
In watching Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets , I can’t help but think that this guy on appearance possesses the heart of a lion. He plays with such abandonment and that he’s extremely confident in his allround skills. What is even more striking is in that playing alongside seasoned veterans and young players , he shows such maturity that is far beyond his years. And the leadership shown is even far more surprising. In tandem with power forward David West , guard Peja Stojackovic and Tyson Chandler the team has shown that it has the mettle to play with the best that’s on offer in the Western Conference.
The Hornets possess the game to play amongst the best in the regular season. But we’re not yet sure as to what they’re capable of doing in the postseason. And that mightn’t bode well for them once the playoffs start. Though it’ll be interesting to see how they’ll fare !
An MVP award isn’t based on a player’s exploits in the postseason . It’s based on what he’s accomplished in the regular season. At least that’s what I’d like to think. But I’d dare say that the panel of journalists that make up the adjudicators of this accolade would tell you otherwise ? I for one think, that for them it’s nothing more than a lovefest for the player they’d deem who has favor with them . Rather than the award being based on the merits of a player’s achievements and what he means to his team. We as fans have our choices and though we may disagree with some of the candidates. The one thing we can establish and agree upon, we wouldn’t be discussing their merits if they didn’t have the game to back it up.
So in what can be seen as a shameless plug with due respect to Dwayne Wade and Charles Barkley ………these are the guys in my five . Though it can be said that there are six candidates mentioned. So who’d be in your five ? Let me know by posting your comments even if you’d disagree with some if not all of them. I’ll look forward to reading what’s on tap. Chimin’ out.

Top!! Nice writeup. As I don’t even look at the NBA in the newspaper, I have no picks in this venue. Your picks prolly just as good as the next guy, I don’t have a clue about the NBA. Fuzz

Even if you’re not an NBA fan you’ve got to be pleased with what’s unfolding within the league at present. It’s becoming more about intrigue than anything else. And though the Celtics are the presumptive favorites to win it all. I think that they might be in for a rude awakening. We all saw and remember what happened to the Patriots don’t ? Less I forget another team from the New England area ?
When the saying came about God Doesn’t Like Ugly ! It was meant to mean the representatives greater Boston area and beyond. In other words all of the damn New England area. The fans up there can be so conceited ! And I’m saying this as an avid Pats’ fan. I know my own limitations at this juncture.

I have no problem making some non-traditional choices for the MVP. In my opinion, it doesn’t always have to be a leading scorer. For example, Shawn Marion very well could have been deserving of MVP consideration during his time in Phoenix.
But I’ll give it a go…
Lebron James
Chris Paul
Kobe Bryant
Tim Duncan
Deron Williams
You could make a case for several other guys, too. Dwight Howard, Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudemire, Dirk Nowitzki, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett…and others.
But for the sake of argument, I usually go with one of the top teams…and a player they couldn’t do without.
Lebron might be the most obvious choice, but I would hesitate to give it to him…given that his team is a good 15 or 16 games behind the conference leader.
Players with high scoring averages and low FG percentages don’t impress me. To me it’s more about the all-around game & efficient basketball. That’s why I put Deron Williams on that list. He’s scoring near 20 PPG, over 10 assists…he handles the ball and controls the offense the majority of the time for his team. Also, very few guards shoot over 50%…but he’s at 51% FG, and 40% on 3-pointers.
Lot of candidates this year…tough choice.

I’ll also buy into your rhetoric, bro. And I’ll give it a whirl this way:
Chris Paul
Kobe Bryant
Lebron James
Had Kobe not stumbled against Houston, and Lebron against Cleveland, I’d have both Kobe and LBJ ahead of CP3.
However, with the race being just as you desribe it, my ranking is subject to change every other day. But I doubt that I’d be voting for anyone other than the three I name.
Great job!

Paul Pierce
Yes, Paul Pierce

It would hard to pick a Celtic or a Piston, they play team ball to win. Unlike LeBrick who loves to watch himself on Sports Center.
Chris Paul or bean would be at the top of the list.
March 20th, 2008 at 1:02 pm
miracle
LeBrick as you allude to hasn’t got any real support beyond Ilgauskas. So that’s why he’s got to be come the human highlight reel.
I’d concur that CP III and Kobe ought to be part of the conversation. But it’s as I’ve stated it’ll be nothing more than a lovefest between Bryant and LeBron and that’s how the adjudicators’ll make up their minds once and for all.

I see no problems with the candidates you’ve picked out. But I do believe that the likes of Deron and CP will have their day in the sun. But this year won’t be it. It’ll come down between a trio of players. Kobe , LBJ and KG. And you can take that to the bank !

It’s as I’ve said to dan it’ll more likely than not come down to a triumvirate of players. LBJ, Kobe and KG. The others mentioned are all worthy candidates that’s for sure. But this year it’s been a lovefest of unbelievable proportions for these three in particular.

It’s as I’ve mentioned in my responses . It’s going to come down to the lovefest for the deemed ‘Three Wise Men Of The Game’…LeBron , Kobe and KG. The other candidates are noteworthy but the love by the basketball wrtiters for these three in particular’ll determine who will win the award. As to that’ll be is open to debate as of now.

One more things guys as the award is voted on only by members of the press who are writers on basketball. Knowledgeable though they are. I’m not so sure that these guys are as astute as they make out themselves out to be.
