With all of the certainty of the Democratic Presidential candidate contest . The NBA’s MVP contest is liable to be just as cantankerous, contentious and have the about the same amount of tension and perhaps terseness. The poltical infighting within the party can only lead me for one to believe that the Presidential campaign’ll be McCain’s to lose, if the Democrats don’t get their house in order and stop making complete assholes of themselves. As to the NBA’s own list of candidates there’s a slew of candidates that are equally appealing in so many different ways.
Sen Hillary Rodham-Clinton (D. Ny) One of two Democratic Party candidates seeking their party’s nomination. The other being Sen. Barack Obama (D. Ill)
The other candidate and contender for the party’ s leadership position and that for the Presidency is Barack Obama.
And whilst Hillary Rodham-Clinton and Barack Obama wage their war of words as to who best fits the ideals and makes for the best candidate for the party. The majority of NBA fans are more concerned as to who’s more deserving of the accolade of being the league’s MVP.
Kevin Garnett of the Boston Celtics. Whose play this season might just be the sole reason that they make it to the playoffs. He’s provided leadership and heart to a team that in reality didn’t possess any until his arrival. picture courtesy of ap/photos/….
The ravenous NBA fans can be thankful that there’s a plethora of candidates to choose from in either conference. Though it can be maintained the quality of basketball being played in the Western Conference is of a much higher quality altogether than what is being played in the East. Though not all of us’ll agree as to who those stars are in a great many respects.
The Boston Celtics have set the league alight this season and that has been primarily down to the presence of Kevin Garnett. Who it can be said is having a phenomenal season. His productivity and leadership is apparent in the turnaround of a Celtics’ team that seemingly might’ve been going nowhere this season until Garnett’s arrival. And with the addition of another All Star in the guise of Ray Allen this team has now become a formidable one.
They’re now seen as the presumptive favorites to win it all at the culmination of the NBA season. Ther Celtics with their win last night over the Houston Rockets cemented their position as the elite team in the Eastern Conference. The fans in Detroit however might think otherwise. As their quintet of starting players can arguably say that they might be the equal of the Celtics. Both are certainly capable of putting on a show of quality basketball .
Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic shows his intensity driving the lane. picture courtesy of ap/photos/…….
Overall the candidacy in the East isn’t that great but what there is , it can be said is of sound quality and of the best that the conference does have to offer. There are no real surprises there however perhaps than possibly the growth and maturity being shown by the Orlando Magic’s Dwight Howard. He might just be the best center in the Eastern Conference at this juncture. Though his game hasn’t yet reached its full potential. There are ominous signs that once he’s rached his peak he’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
The Orlando Magic have made it to the postseason by process of elimination as no one within their division is within a hair’s breath of catching them. Dwight Howard and his game overall has matured though there are times where the player himself lapses and shows signs of fatigue and desperation. But in time I believe that he’ll overcome those frailties and be the player that many believe that he can be. Howard’s presence and the tandem that has been created with the arrival of Rashard Lewis in Orlando has provided the step up for the franchise to be considered contenders but favorites.
But if Howard is seen as the leader of the team it can be said that the catalyst for much of their play has been provided by swingman Hedo Turkoglu. His play has been inspirational for the team this season.

LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers . picture courtesy of ap/photos/…….
Last year’s losing team the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to prove that last year’s arrival in the Finals was no fluke and that lightning can strike twice in the same place. LeBron James leads the team with authority and intensity but it can be said that it’s not matched by his teammates. And even though there’s been additions and subtractions to the team, it can be said that the Cavaliers’ success will be determined by not James’ presence of mind in leading the team when they’re enjoying success but also when they face real adversity as well. And based on what we’ve seen from the team so far this season things don’t seem to bode well for them should they make the postseason.
As much as his stats stand out on the box score one can see that he can’t continue to do it all on his own. And even with the presence of Zydrunas Ilgauskas as the other scoring option. The team’s limitations can be measured by the fact that other than James and Ilgauskas there’s not really much else there that’d make you think that they really do have a chance to win it all.
Chauncey Billups of the Detroit Pistons shows his grit and determination. picture courtesy of ap/photos…..
The ever present Detroit Pistons though so disappointing last year in the playoffs with their heart rendering loss to the Cavaliers in the conference finals. They’ve remained under the radar and have played the usual solid brand of basketball expected of them. Under Flip Saunders’ coaching they’ve shown the same resolute staunch defensive capabilities that we’ve known them to possess. But on the other hand they’ve also shown that they can play and score with the most explosive of teams in the NBA.
And that’s why they cannot be counted out as a threat in the Eastern Conference or as a contender overall for the NBA title. And in point guard Chauncey Billups they may well possess one of the more understated stars within the league. The man just lets his play on the court do all of the talking for him. And who are we to judge him otherwise ? He just brings his game to the house each night and we as fans of the game are the better for it. In this day inflated ego’s and a star power driven league it is good to see a player that still possesses a normalcy about himself and game a that only gets better with age .
In watching the Western Conference unfold at present is akin to watching a National Geographic nature piece where we’ll see an onslaught of carnage take place as predators devour the weak amongst their lot. It’s indeed scary to this carnage and not wonder how the survivors’ll ever make it beyond the point they’ve now reached. It may well add to the excitement of the season for the fans. But if you’re team isn’t winning at this point and a contender then you ought to hop unto another bandwagon. The teams sitting atop of their divisions have had a successful season so far. And one might some are having memorable and often spectacular seasons. The Houston Rockets of late have been on a tear. Though last night they were brought firmly back to earth with a 94-74 loss to the Boston Celtics.
The Portland Trailblazers and New Orleans Hornets have been the surprising teams in the west with their strong play. Though the Blazers have cooled off as of late. What once looked like a promising season has now turned out to be much less. But it provides them with hope for the future.
