Guinness,Sports And The Women !

Well   the  postseason     has   started    though   not  quite  in  a  spectacular  fashion  .   The   conference   finals   berths  have   been   set.  In  the  Eastern  Conference    we’ve    got  the  storied   franchise  of  the   Boston    Celtics   and   the    Detroit   Pistons.   And   that’s   the  house   that   Joe  Dumars   built.   

Rasheed  Wallace   and   Richard  Hamilton     celebrate  a   play  that   equated   in   a   postitive   outcome  for  the    Detroit  Pistons.   In   winning   the  game  103-97   the   Pistons   have  levelled   the  series   at   one   game   apiece .  In  doing   so   the  Celtics   have  suffered  their    first   loss  this    postseason   on  their   homecourt,   the   TD Banknorth  Garden , in  Boston, Ma.   picture   courtesy  of   ap/photo/Jim Rogash  ……….. 

And   in  Dumars    we might   just   be   witnessing   the   most  astute   GM   assessor  of     NBA  talent    in  all  of   the   NBA  without   a  doubt.   Though   not  everything    he   touches      turns  to    gold.  He’s  about   as  close    to    <em> King  Midas </em>  as  one   could   ever   wish   to   see    with   regard  to   the  GM’s   within   the  NBA.   Though   one       does   remember   the     Darko  Milicic  fiasco.

In   the  Western  Conference    we’ve    the   revitalized     Los  Angeles   Lakes  led    by    the   current   MVP  of  the  league   Kobe   Bryant   , who’s  been ably   assisted     by   his  comrade   in  arms   Pau  Gasol.     Since    the   arrival     of   the  Spaniard  Gasol ,   this    team      has    improved     by  leaps   and   bounds.   And    though    it  hasn’t  been   merely    Bryant   and   Gasol   alone   that  has   led    to   the   resurrection    of   the    team.  Their   bench     has   proved    that    there’s  a   confidence     to   this   team   that   hasn’t  been   since     the  days    when     the  Kobe  and  Shaq  roadshow    hit   the   bright  lights.   And    the   rest   as    they    say    is   history.

The  Lakers’   opponents  in   the  conference    finals   are   the   current   NBA   champions    the   San  Antonio   Spurs.     The    quintessential   warriors     that   seem   to    know    to   play    the   game    with    such   efficiency     without    showing     any    great    effort  at   all.   However   based    on    Thursday  night’s   effort  where    their   inexplicable   loss   to   the  Lakers  has   left    many   scratching    their   heads   asking  what   the   hell    just   happened  ?   The   third   quarter   in  hand   and   with   a    20 pt  lead   the   Spurs     succumbed    to   the  Lakers   in  the   fourth   quarter  and  eventually   lost   the   game.

And    though   there’s    the    feeling     that    this    is  a   position   that  the   Spurs    have    been  accustomed  to   seeing   before.    It  has   been   the  Lakers    who   seem   to  be    showing   that   they’re   capable    of   dealing    with   whatever   the   Spurs  are   able    to    throw  at them.   It’d   be  foolish   to  write   off   the    reigning   champions   at   this    juncture .   As  they’ve often   been   in  this    position  before   and     have   shown     that   they’re    more   than   capable  of   acquitting    themselves      comfortably.    It   would  be   prudent   to  believe   that   they   can   overcome    the   one   game    deficit and    play    themselves    back    into   contention  in    this   series.

There’s   no  mistaking    it   when   you   see    something  that’s   not  only   extremely   out of  the  ordinary  .   But    it’s  also   downright   farcical  and   insane.    I  came   across   this    little     ditty    today  and   I’m  at a   complete    loss   as     what     to  think     ,  other      than    to  say    what   a    lucky   bastard .        The  individual    on   the   receiving  end   that  is.  

In  the  recording   studio   everyone   is  expected to    give  a   helping  hand   to the   engineer.    However  in  this   case   I  think   that  the  A &R   assistant  went   a   little   too   far.   He  may  have   said    blow   me    but   I   don’t think  he  literally    meant  it.   And   the  question  one   would   also   ask    did   she   enjoy   the  meal  ?  And  did    she    infact  swallow   ?

When   they   say   it  is    better   to   give    than   to  receive ,  they   may   not   have   known    what    the   hell    they   were   talking  about.

I’ve  got to admit  that  I  for   one  was   somewhat  skeptical    of  the trade  that  sent    perennial All  Star  Allan  Iverson   from    the  76 ers    to  the   Denver  Nuggets   in  exchange   for    point   guard   Andre  Miller  and  other   entities.   And  as  much  as it pained    the   fans  in   Philadelphia   to  part   with  Iverson  at  the  time.   I  don’t  believe  that   many  of    them   would’ve   envisioned    the   success   they’ve   attained     since   the   trade   was   completed.

GM Billy   King   and  coach   Maurice  Cheeks   in    one   fail   swoop    have   turned    around  the     fortunes   of the  franchise    and   have    become   the  darlings  within   the   confines  of the  city.     King   long the   pariah    who  it  was    felt   had   done   the  franchise   something   of  a  disservice  may   well  have     worked   his way    back   into  the   affection  of  the  fans.     And   as  proud  as   the    city’s     citizens  are   it  can   be said   that   once    scorned   in  the   city  of   Brotherly    Love    you’ve    got  to   do   a   hell  of    lot     to    put   yourself     back   into   their    good  graces.

Since   the arrival  of   Miller  in    Philadelphia    the  team   has  been   on a  tear   except   to   say   that   whilst   much  of the  notice    has  been   on  the    likes   of  the  Hornets,   Celtics  , Mavericks,  Suns  ,  Lakers,   Spurs  ,  Lakers  and   Pistons.  The   76 er’s   have    quietly      gone  along ,    put  on   an   impressive    display  of  basketball and  at   the  same    time    placed   themselves   in   contention  for  a  playoff  spot    in   the    Eastern  Conference.    Much  of this   could  not  have  been   done   with the   astute    managment  and    coaching   style   of  Maurice   Cheeks.   He’s   been  a  guiding   influence   on   this   team .   And    though   his  name   hasn’t  been   mentioned as   a  likely candidate   for  coach  of the  Year.  I’d   certainly    like   to   think  that   his  name    would  be   considered   as  a  nominee.

On  paper  their    record    mightn’t be    impressive    but  when   you   consider   where   they   were    prior  to  the  trade    one   has  to    look   to the intangibles     gained    by   from  this trade.   Many   considered   the   76 ers   all   but   left   for   dead  as  it wasn’t   felt  that   they   could    mount a serious   challenge   to     gain a   postseason   berth.   Well  they’ve   done   that  and  more  .   At this    juncture    they   may   well     be  the   one   team  in    the  east    that    no    one   really   wants   to  play.     They   upended   the    Detroit   Pistons     with     some   ease   defeating    Flip  Saunders’  team   101-94  with  Andre Iguodala    scoring   25 pts  .    Iguodala   along   with  Samuel  Dalembert   and    Andre    Miller   have   been  the   team’s     mainstay   this  season.    As   a   triumvirate     they’ve   been   very   effective  and    productive.   The  bench    players   also   have   been   very     resourceful   and   proved    to  be   everything   that  Cheeks    had   hoped  for   and    more.

Though  there’s   the   thinking    that   Philadelphia    won’t   be   amongst  those   challenging  a  place  in the  conference   finals.    You’d be   hard   pressed  to   tell   the  fans   or  their   players   otherwise.     They’re    good   enough   on  paper  to   handle   the    likes  of   Orlando    and    Cleveland    but   the    test   would  obviously   come  up    against   the    likes   of     Detroit  and   Boston       considered  to  be    the  two    elite   teams    of the   Eastern  Conference.     The   regular  season   is   now    winding    down   and   with  the   playoffs    little   over  a    week   away    the Sixers     have     put  themselves    in    a     position  to  make   some   real    noise      within   the  conference.   And   it   would   be    foolish    to   discount   them   at  this     juncture.  In    doing   so  it’d    be  at   your   peril    to    underestimate   the   resolve  and     intestinal   fortitude    of  this   team.     As    little   was    expected    of   them    once  the  Iverson  deal   went down.   

 If  anything    it    looks   as   if   that     Philadelphia   may   well  have   got   themselves     a   real   bargain  and     the  better   end   of   the  deal.    The  Denver  Nuggets     themselves    are   in three  way  battle    for   one    playoff  berth    and   it  may   well  come  down   to   which    one  of   its   counterparts   in  that   battle  can   withstand  the    ensuing      casualties   and  fatalities  of  the   battles   as  they   play     out.        

For  Cheeks   and    the    76ers’   front    office     they    now   know  that   they’ve  laid    the   building    blocks   of   a  solid  foundation   for  this   franchise   in   the   future.    Built   around   their   triumvirate  of   Dalembert , Iguodala  and  Miller     and   with  a    young  and   eager  group   of   players  that  are     out  to  prove  their   worth   .    There’s    no  reason    to   believe   why     this    team   can’t  be   serious     contenders    for      conference   honors   in the  future  and    quite     possibly   make   a  serious    run   at  winning  an   NBA  championship.     Something    that  they’ve   not  had   in   the  city  since  the    days     of  Julius   Irving.    And   if   you   can   remember  back    that  far   enough    you’ll    know that   those    highlights    were   in   black   and  white    not   in   color    as  they   are    today.

The  fortuitousness   of    one  deal   may    well    have    changed   the    fortunes     of    two   franchises.   As to  how   it’ll  end   for   both.  Let’s    just    say     that    Maurice  Cheeks       does   have   something  to  be really     smiling   about.  The   fans  in  Philadelphia  are    bound  to   show   him   their     appreciation    even   if   it’s    not  always    within  their   nature  to  show  that    to  a  hero    or   even   one   of   their    very     own.     They’re  a  fickle    bunch   in  Philadlephia   not  unlike    any other    major   sporting      venue    or     city    across  the  country   where  the   fans   can    either  show their   appreciation     or   their    displeasure  at   the     drop  of   a   hat.

Much     has   been   made    that   the    sport   of   soccer    hasn’t   encompassed     the  North  American     population   en   masse’.    But  that could   well  be   down  to  the  fact   that   the  sport   was    never   really  seen  as  competitive     let  alone   combatative.     And   that’s    been  the   clear   as   to  the   reason   why       it’s    still    yet     to  find  a  foothold    within    the   country.      For    all   of     the   hype   surrounding     the   introduction     of    David   Beckham    to   the  North  American   market  and   that   of    Major   League  Soccer.   It   can  be    said     that   Beckham’s    introduction   though   met    with  a  certain    degree  of   skepticism   hasn’t   really    peroduced   the  sort   spectacle    or   excitement     one   thought.

Beckham    an   advertizer’s   dream     and  an   accomplished    player    has   seen   better    days   as    his     most   productive    days   are    not  ahead   but     in   the  past.    As   to    the   reason    for     the  Los    Angeles   Galaxy     signing    him    to     a  five   year    lucrative   contract    that’s  said   to  be   worth      as   much   as    $250m   including      endorsement    opportunities.   Beckham    for   his  part    will    have   to   go   a   long   to    proving    his    worth   to   the   team    as   well    as   ensuring   their     success     in    the  league.     And    that    more   than   anything   has    been   what  this    has    been  all   about    when   it    came   to    Beckham’s     signing.     This    is     a   partnership       first ,    last     and    for    the    foreseeable   future.       Both    parties’    reputations     are    built      upon     it    and       they’ll    be    judged     as    to     its     benefits    according   to   the   success    garnered        on     and    off   the    field.

And     whilst     the     MLS    though   no     longer    in  its    infancy    it    still    has      major     growing   pains     despite    its    existence    of  over   a  decade.       What    corporate    partners     it     has      have    been   willing   offset    the    financial    burdens       in   order     to   reap    what    they    hope    will   be      vast     dividends     down     the    road.      A   television    contract       ABC   and   its    cable    entity   ESPN   has  brought     the    sport  a    wider    audience     here    in   North  America.   Albeit     nowhere   as    much    as   can     be  seen     by     its   South  American     counterparts.

In  the  UK   however    where    the    sport    sits    atop        of    everything     else      on  the  sporting     horizon   in  terms  of    popularity.     It   has    to  be   noted      the    teams       there    have     their    loyal   fans      and  the   game   itself        is   awash     with   money     far    beyond   anything     imaginable     here   in the    US.    In    terms   of  merchandizing    alone       the  revenues    of   the      league  and   it  ancillary    products     run     into   several     billion    dollars.    It    has   a   healthy   relationship    with    all  of    its  corporate  partners   and      that  of  its   broadcast    entities    that    promote   the   sport    domestically     as   well   as    internationally.     Much    of   the   success   of   game     has  been   down   to    the     fact    of   the    popularity  of    the     more    prominent  team s    such     as    Manchester   United ,  Arsenal  ,  Chelsea  and     Liverpool     not     just    domestically    but    also     internationally.      These   teams    have   a   pedigree  and       loyalty     that    has  been   built    over    time.     The   same    can’t    be   said    of     MLS     as  a   soccer   entity    as    the  league    has  marketed     itself     poorly    amongst   its   fans.

The    Barclays    English   Premiership League     has    been   built   around    and   upon   the      popularity  of     of  its     most   prominent   teams    and     that  of  its     elite     players.     And    no    team   at     present     is      more    popular    than   that  of   the     marauding   Red  Devils  of   Manchester   United.   United’s      most      popular      player      may     well   be     Portuguese    international     Cristiano   Ronaldo.    And    it   is   Ronaldo       who   has    been   receiving     rave     reviews      from   not    only   the    fans  and   press   alike     but   also   from    his      peers    within   the   game  itself.    He    may    well     be    the     most   skilled    athlete    in   the    world     that   no    one   on  the  continent    of   North    America      has     heard   of.

United’s      popularity      may  well    be     on   par    with    that    of    the   New   York  Yankees    whose     own    popularity    too   is    far    flung    internationally.    Wherever    one   would   see   a    Yankees’  cap    abroad     be    it    on   a   native   or    not.  You’re   assured   that   the    team    is    well     known    and   so    too  is   their      history    and     that    of    their      most    popular     players      past    and  present.   The    same    can    be   said      for    Manchester     United   and     its    vast  throng    of    fans         domestically   as   well     as    internationally. And    much   like     the   Yankees   with    its      plethora    of      international   stars        United     too      is     laden    with       players    from    various     nations   across   the   globe.       And   that    may     well      be    why    they’re     so     well     loved     apart    from   the   success   garnered        domestically     as  well      as     internationally.      Wherever    they    play      it’s  a     guaranteed    sellout      and     the   fans     throng   to   see   them     play      no    matter   what    the  competition    be   it  a    preseason   friendly  ,    a    major   tournament   or    just  a   regular   season   scheduled      game.  

If  Major   League   Soccer    is   to  learn    anything      from    its    counterparts    abroad       then    it’s   about      growing    the   game     not   only     organically      from    within       but   also       making      sur e    that   the    product      itself        is     of     the    highest   order   and    well worth    the   price    of    admission.     If      nothing    else       they’ll   want    to      lure   the     fans    through     the    turnstiles     repeatedly.  The    game    itself    and    its   worldwide     popularity       notwithstanding     has    its   place     on    the   sporting   landscape    and   even    if  eventually    it  fails    to   find  a   footing     here.         The   fans      can    always    look          across    the      Atlantic     to     see        the    sport     being       played        the    way    it’s      meant    to   be    played    and    not   just   the    illusion    as   to     how     a   perception    of   it       can    lure    the   fans.     Small      on   substance       but      by   enlarge     overhyped    with   a     plethora    of     anomalies.

Far be  it   for  me  to say  that   we’re   not  all   uninspired  by  the   political  candidates  aspiring   for   political  office.  And  to  think  that  the  remaining  candidates   are about   inspiring  as  watching    paint  dry.   Barack  Obama  ,  Hillary   Rodham Clinton   and   John  McCain   …….boy    how   times    have   changed   ?     

Which    has   me   thinking    is  there   anything    that’d   inspire   me   to   take   some    interest   in  something     beyond   the   political    mishmash  of  idiocy  at  present.     The   polls    out    there  allude   us   to    what   the  electorate    is    supposedly   thinking   .     Well    I  thought     about  coming   up    with   my  own   poll.      I’ll    give   you    the   readers  a   chance    to  cast  your   vote.       The    choices     are    as  to  the   following    candidates   Ashley  Judd,  Kelly   Hu   and    the   beguiling    Salma  Hayek.

Given  the   choice  of    the  Presidential    nominees   I ’m    of   the   opinion   that    my   poll    and     nominees    would  be   far     more    enticing  than  any  of  the   ones  that’ve   been   foisted    upon   us.     So    without   further  ado    here   are    the   candidates.

There   was   a  time   when   Ashley   Judd  was   the   daring   darling   of   Hollywood    playing    the   demanding   heroine  .     But  alas  of late     her  career   has  taken  a    backseast  to the    exploits   of    her      husband       Dario  Franchitti  who’s    now    trying   to  make  a  name   for   himself    within    NASCAR.   An  ardent     sport’s     fan  and   all  things    related    to    the    Kentucky   Wildcats.

And   I’m  beginning   to  see   why  Ashley   would   make  a  great   candidate   in  whatever  endeavor    she   decided   to   enter   into.     Not  only   bright   but  extremely      alluring   and   beautiful.

Is   there   really  anything    that   she  might  not   be  capable   of    based    upon  her   merits  ?

A  little   less  candid   but  still    all   the  more    palatable. 

Asian   American   beauty   Kelly   Hu   has  been   around     for   a    number  of  years   appearing    in   episodic   serial   television  as well  as     movies.   And  one  can  see    why    she’s   been   very   much   in   demand  for   a  variety   of   roles.   

And   Hu    is  one  of the  main   reasons     I   sought   to     make    one   of  the  choices    for   you  all.   

And    what    Kelly  has to   offer  as     a  candidate   is   glaringly    obvious.  There’s    more   to  this   female    than   meets    the  eye  wouldn’t   you  say ?

The  platform    that  Kelly’d  be   would  be   addressing  and   working  to attain   would  be  ?    Any   answers  at  this  juncture  ? 

  A  manifesto    worth   taking   note    of   ?  

Our  final   candidate   is   actress,  producer  ,  director and   activist     Salma   Hayek.    Perhaps the  best  known  of  all  of the  Latina   actesses   out there ?

Salma   looks   stunningly   beautiful .    

A  pensive     Salma    allays    our   fears  .

Hayek    shows   us   that    she   can  also    hang   with   the  best  of   the  young  starlets   out  there.   And  it’s   clear  to see why.

Before  and  after.   The    changes   in   Salma     along   the  way.    Maturity   not   only  as   a  performer   but  as    as  a  person   too.   Something   that   we  can’t  all   too   often  say   about    our    politicians  at  all.

These  are  the  candidates   and   in  this   case   it’s   encumbent   upon   you   as  the  voters   to  make  wise     decision.   So   take   the   chance   at   showing   that  the  power  of  the  vote  does   work.        By  taking    the   time    to  make   your    voice   be  heard   and   that   your  vote  counts. A poll will be placed to adjoin this piece in order for you all too see how the votes are being tabulated.

Though   I  was  never   much   of  an  avid  fan   of  the   program   I  found   something   simplistically  erotic   about  the  show   Buffy  The  Vampire  Slayer.    Though   the  acting   was   somewhat   rough  around   the   edges.    The   show   on  the   whole    was well written   and   the  characterization    was   executed   very  well.       But it  was   the   female     stars   that      attracted   me   primarily  to   the   show. 

And  none  more   so  than    that  of     actresses   Sarah   Michelle    Gellar   as   Buffy    and   Allyson   Hannigan  as   her    erstwhile   partner     in     crime     Willow.      That  being   said   the   show  was   set  around  it   being   a  drama    with    a  splattering   of   comedy   thrown    in   for   good meausre.      So   without  furhter   ado   I    give  to   you  in   all   of    their    glory   Sarah  Michelle  Gellar   and  Allyson    Hannigan   aka   Willow   and Buffy.      Be  afraid   be     very   afraid      as   these     two    women   aren’t   who   you  thought   they   were     by   any  stretch    of     the    imagination.    Let it   not   be   said   that    tophatal    doesn’t   serve   his   readers    well    with   a   bevy     of    provocative    beauties   at   each   and   every  instance.      It’s    just    my   way  of   showing     you  all  my   appreciation   for   you   coming  to    my  site    to  read     what    I’ve    got    to   offer  .
